What are “fairy tale” ends and are they unhealthy for your hair?

The bottom edge of your hair is called the hem. When looking at people with long hair we often idealize a very thick and blunt hem. The hair has a swish to it with everything the same length or perhaps some layers but the bottom part still straight across. Hair that’s hem is not even and straight across is sometimes called “scraggly.”

Which is a real shame.

I think it is associated with being “unkempt” because it’s what happens when you don’t trim your hair regularly. But there’s nothing unhealthy about it on its own.

In the long hair community we call it “fairy tale” ends when the hair has a softness and taper to it rather than a blunt hem. It calls to mind the image of a romantic fairy of old.

It’s not an indication of anything wrong with hair, it’s just what happens if you aren’t trimming.

Especially as your hair approaches its terminal length. The closer you are to the end of your hair’s ability to grow, the more taper there is likely to be because not every hair on your head can make it that far.

However, if you’re experiencing a lot of taper and your hair is only mid back length or shoulder length, look at some other indicators of hair health.

Is your hair dry and brittle? Does it break easily? Does it feel unusually rough?

Those are indications that your hair health may be compromised. Not necessarily, but there’s probably a lot you can do to get your hair longer and looking healthier. (Ultimate Guide To Growing Hair)

It’s not a crime to have fine hair, to have thin hair, to have tapered hair. The most important thing is that you are happy with your hair.

If you prefer a blunt hem, then go ahead and get trims. If you like fairy tale ends, don’t get trims.

I am an exception to this guideline.

I actually prefer a blunt hem myself. I find them aesthetically pleasing and I would like to have a blunt hem. Some day. But I prioritize growth over appearance right now. I want to reach my growth goal before I start trimming. But there’s nothing wrong with either choice. My hair is still very healthy!
