6 Long Hairstyles For Older Women

As I approach my 40s I’ve started to hear a lot about how long hair is too youthful and not age appropriate for mature women. All over I see people asking things like: should a 60 year old woman wear long hair? Can a 70 year old woman wear her hair long? Is long hair okay over 50? So apparently there’s a wide variety of ages at which women are considered too old for long hair. And I can’t help but disagree. I have no intention of cutting my hair just because I’m getting older.

Older Women Can Have Long Hair If They Want To

There’s nothing wrong with women of any age wearing their hair however they like. If you want to rock pigtails in your 80s, go for it! It’s just hair.

But some older women are wanting to mature their look and find long hair styles that are elegant and refined on an older lady.

Elegant Long Hairstyles For Older Women

Here are my favorite hairstyles that look classy and elegant on mature women. And most of them are super easy updos, whether you are 50, 40, or over 70!

Chignon

There’s nothing more classic than a chignon! It’s any kind of low bun. This one is made with a hairstick but there are many ways to create them. As you’ll see in the video below I made this by doing mostly a Celtic knot bun and putting the tail over the top. I love the silhouette on this bun!

French twist

Another great classic is a French twist. The video shows two different ways to do them! The second method is best for longer hair. The first one can work on even shoulder length hair.

Low fan bun

A very easy hairstyle that’s quick and elegant! You just make a ponytail, don’t pull the last loop all the way through, and wrap the tail around.

Fan bun

This is a cool hairstyle created by JJJ, a long hair legend! It uses just two claw clips

Gibson tuck

This is a beautiful classic hairstyle that works on shorter or long-ish hair. It’s hard for me to get it! But you’ll see in the video how to do it.

Low knot bun

Finally, make this knot bun by literally making a knot of your hair and wrapping the extra around it.

Here is a video with tutorials for all six of these styles:
