Are you looking to change things up with your hair styles? Sometimes with long hair we get into a rut or we just don’t know various styles for long hair. Not to mention with quarantine there’s lots of people who now have hair longer than they expected! There’s so many styles you can do with long hair. Far more than wearing it down.

Sharing styles for long hair is one of my passions in life. I love the versatility of my long hair and I’ve learned hundreds of hair styles, most of which are gentle and safe to protect hair and help it grow better and healthier!

4 of the long hair styles that have tutorials in this article

It’s easy and fun to learn new styles for your long hair so let’s dive in!

Hairstyles For Long Hair At Work

Work is so uncertain right now, but even if what you’re doing is zoom meetings, you can still have sleek and professional hair.

French Twist Bun

This is a really cool style that creates a little cinnamon bun peeking out from a French twist! It’s worth mastering. I recommend a fork for holding it.

Flexi Braided Chignon

I invented this long hair style! It’s elegant and understated but lovely. You’ll need a hair slide of some kind, such as this.

French Twist or Slide (variation for longer hair)

If your hair is a bit long for a French twist try the French slide variation. For the twist you’ll want a comb or swerve and for the slide a flexi or hair stick is best!

Romantic French Twist

I love this variation on the French twist, it adds a braid and it just looks so lovely and different.

Logroll

The log roll also has an elegant and timeless look to it. It can also be done braided. I like a hairstick for holding this, but you could also put a flexi over the top of the roll or a hair fork through the top.

Casual and Simple Styles For Long Hair

Messy Bun for Long Hair

A messy bun is loved for having the laid back appearance of not putting a ton of work into your hair. For medium length hair it is a very quick and easy updo. For very long hair it takes a bit more effort but it’s not too much and it looks nice and casual. You’ll need a hair tie and pins for this. I recommend spin pins.

Pineapple Braid

I love this simple variation on a regular braid. It keeps the braid up away from damage better, and it keeps the ends tucked in and protected. A flexi is ideal for this.

Celtic Bun

This is such a simple but gorgeous bun. When you just want a bun that is swept back from your face and all the hair is up this is a great choice. A hair stick is a great choice for this one, as it will allow the details of the bun to show.

Braided Pinless

This is one of my favorites that I learned ten years ago and still do today. It is unique and simple but cool looking. You’ll need a hair fork for this one. And even though for some reason it is called “pinless” you will need one pin to hold in your ends probably. I like an Amish U pin for this.

Cute Styles For Long Hair

Top knot

A top knot is another classic. There’s a few ways to do it but I really like the look of doing a french braid up the back of your head to the bun on the top but I haven’t tried it yet. Here is the version that I’ve done before.

UPDATE 2024: Here is another Topknot variation that worked super well on my now calf-length hair:

Maki

This is a super creative and beautiful hairstyle. It’s a bun but has the tail hanging out (great way to show off some curls too). A flexi or hair stick is ideal for this hair style.

Vintage

A friend asked me to recreate a vintage style that she had a picture for and I love how it came out. It has the appearance of being down, but it is actually hair tucked under. Hair ties and pins are what you’ll need to do this.

I did something similar with a snood and partial coronet braid that I wear a lot:

Seashell Bun

This is a gentle, loose, and romantic bun. It’s not the most solid (you aren’t going jogging in this one!) but it’s lovely and relaxed. I like a hair fork for holding this.

Fancy Styles For Long Hair

And every so often you want a really spectacular style, something fancy and eye-catching that shows off your skills with your long hair. These hair styles are a little fancier, but no less easy to do.

Flower Bun

This is a huge, voluminous bun. You need a hair elastic and a bunch of bobby pins. I also added a decorative u pin in the center from here.

JJJ Fan Bun

For this hair style you are actually going to need two jaw clips! I like these ones for it.

Pull Through Braid

A very popular type of faux braid. It is very eye-catching! You’ll need a whole lot of hair elastics for this. I used these regular elastics in a smaller size and they match my hair color.

Finally, when you are caught without a hair tie and you need to get your hair back…

The Nautilus! This is a classic style in India and it is known around the web also as the no pin bun. It can take a little practice but done right you can keep you hair up without any tie, pin, or accessory of any kind. The key is to get the center part of your hair pushed very firmly into the loop. You’ll see what I mean…
